*about the role*
the counsel ii is responsible for providing legal support for harman's automotive global manufacturing organization while focusing on harman's manufacturing operations in mexico, including support for the local direct and indirect procurement, manufacturing and employment-related efforts in mexico.
this role will also provide legal support for the automotive division, including all automotive strategic business units ("sbu"), customer account management groups ("cam") and corporate functions including the finance, human resources, sales and/or supply chain functions.
this position will report directly to the senior counsel ii automotive europe responsible for the manufacturing operations of the automotive division.
the counsel ii must be able to handle negotiations and establish/maintain systems or structures to deliver necessary legal support and successfully and timely complete critical assignments with little to no supervision.
the counsel ii must also have a broad understanding of harman's business objectives, product offerings, internal organization and stakeholders and the impact of external factors on key business functions including, but not limited to corporate tax and/or treasury, operations, manufacturing, human resources, finance, and information technology.
senior level contract review, drafting, and negotiation experience related to multi-million-dollar agreements is required.
additionally, the counsel ii will have well-developed communication skills for purposes of interfacing with key customers, suppliers, and external stakeholders in collaboration with the automotive division, functional business leaders and local management.
this role will also support operational managers by providing practical advice, recommend and execute proactive actions to mitigate risk, and counsel on complex business issues; as well as manage outside counsel law firms and legal service providers.
an intermediate understanding of budgets, accruals, forecasting, and financial statements is also needed.
finally, this role requires cross-functional communication, collaboration and project management skills, powers of persuasion, and influence.
this role will have direct impact on the operations of the manufacturing plants in mexico, including procurement of necessary production equipment, raw materials and components, supporting harman's compliance with various free trade, special tax/duty efficiency structures (e.g., maquiladora, immex, etc.)
as well as handling labor law-related topics for local staff.
due to the connection of the mexican plant to the global harman manufacturing network, this role will also have commercial impact on other parts of the organization.

managing legal and business risk.
- provide legal advice to human resources professionals and other internal stakeholders on labor and employment laws and regulations, including on matters involving performance, discrimination, termination, and questions related to a union environment, and assist with ensuring compliance with all applicable labor and employment laws and regulations.
- assist with and conduct workplace investigations.
- assist with litigation, including without limitation labor and employment claims.
- identifying legal and regulatory issues in production and employment matters.
- contribute to strategic decisions of local management.
