about the role
the controller owns a portfolio of client accounts and steps into most of the client-facing controller work currently handled by the owner. This role is responsible for accurate, timely accounting; clear financial reporting; and proactive communication with small- and mid-sized business clients.
the controller must be comfortable working remotely, coordinating with a distributed team, and leading conversations with u.s.-based business owners.
what you'll do
* primary accounting contact for assigned clients, providing ongoing client management and advisory .
* lead recurring client calls (monthly / bi-weekly) to review financials and explain results in clear, non-technical language .
* identify key issues (cash flow, margins, variances, compliance) and recommend actionable next steps .
* own full-cycle accounting and month-end close, including reconciliations, revenue recognition, ap/ar review, payroll entries, accruals, and prepaids .
* prepare accurate monthly financial statements ( p&l, balance sheet, cash flow ) and management reports .
* maintain strong workpapers and documentation supporting all balances and adjustments.
* work primarily in quickbooks online, adhering to firm sops for bookkeeping and close.
* identify and resolve errors in client books; lead cleanup and correction projects .
* recommend process improvements and automations to increase efficiency and consistency.
* collaborate with bookkeeping teams (onshore and nearshore) to ensure timely, high-quality delivery .
* review delegated work and provide constructive feedback .
* consistently use and contribute to firm templates, checklists, and sops .
qualifications
* bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent practical experience .
* minimum 5 years of hands-on accounting experience, with progressive growth up to senior accountant role, including month-end close ownership .
* direct experience preparing monthly financial statements for small to mid-sized businesses .
skills
* strong proficiency with quickbooks online (multi-entity, classes, projects or similar).
* solid excel/google sheets skills (vlookup/index-match, pivot tables, basic modeling).
* solid understanding of u.s. Gaap for small businesses.
* demonstrated ability to clean up messy books (unreconciled accounts, misclassifications, prior-period issues).
