general purpose
under immediate supervision, applies standard engineering principles, concepts, theories, and techniques to routine assignments in support of business objectives and provides fundamental engineering leadership and expertise. May conduct feasibility studies, determine manpower and cost estimates, and develop engineering criteria. Performs primary analyses to develop design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components. May apply originality and knowledge of other disciplines to solve basic technical issues. Emphasis on team participation, planning, and achieving results on assigned projects.

* completes engineering tasks within leadership oversight; follows engineering and quality processes.

* collaborates with industrial designers to understand and implement product design vision; investigates multiple solution alternatives.
* evaluates alternatives and tradeoffs, refining feasible options and eliminating weaker ones.
* communicates with project team members, engineers, external experts, and designers to share ideas.
* investigates new or existing suppliers, materials, and processes that could provide solutions.
* completes sketches, models, and detailed analyses; tools include fea, tolerance stacks, kinematics, hand calculations, and diagrams.
* develops prototype fabrication processes and materials; coordinates prototype builds and fabrication of parts.
* evaluates concept models and prototypes against project objectives and requirements.
* identifies potential problems and develops corrective actions using a rigorous problem-solving process.
* solicits cost estimates for prototype and production parts.
* creates and maintains engineering documentation (ecos, deviations, test requests, work orders, drawings, etc.).
* researches product criteria, functions, requirements, and cost targets (customer criteria, performance, manufacturability, quality, service, installation).
* works with performance engineering to develop performance requirements and test plans; conducts or requests physical testing and evaluates results.
* creates, maintains, and releases accurate 3d cad models, drawings, boms, and material specifications for prototype and production.
* supports planning guides, technical specifications, product labeling, and marketing materials.
* supports ppap completion and ensures parts are released for production following hmi procedures.
* collaborates with manufacturing engineering, supply management, operations, and suppliers to refine product designs for tooling, equipment, and processes; assists with supplier evaluation.
* works with quality engineering and dimensional engineers to achieve quality and craftsmanship objectives.
* supports operations and suppliers with problem identification, problem-solving, and operator training during pilot build and launch activities.
* manages individual task work to meet project budgets and timelines.
* reviews part and product designs with the development team to solicit feedback and improvements.
* maintains engineering notes, models, records, and calculations to demonstrate design progression and reviews with lead engineers.
* completes patent disclosures and rights to use (rtu) with legal staff; supports new patent applications as appropriate.
* supports other team members and project activities requiring input from the product development engineer (schedules, budgets, cmf, prototypes, testing, supplier communications).
skills and abilities
* engineering/technical degree from an accredited program or a 2-year technical degree with 5 years of applicable engineering experience.
* 2–4 years of professional engineering experience or 0–3 years of specialty engineering experience with internships or co-ops; experience in leading projects may be essential for some assignments.
* project management experience may be essential for some assignments.
* knowledge of lean principles and continuous improvement opportunities.
* strong communication with people at various levels and ability to work with cross-functional teams.
* proficiency in common office software, engineering software, and herman miller mainframe applications.
* strong problem-solving skills and ability to apply engineering expertise to complex issues.
* ability to prioritize and act with minimal day-to-day supervision; respond effectively to changes affecting project plans.
* strong business acumen and understanding of how decisions impact business results.

additional skills and abilities
* 1–4 years of professional level experience in new product development or continuous improvement of current products.
* proficiency in pro-e (creo) or other equivalent 3d cad software.
