Overview
job summary: under general direction from the director of nursing services, the gi tech is responsible for the proper cleaning and high-level disinfection and maintenance of all video endoscopes and other accessories used in the gi endoscopy suites. Must maintain current knowledge and adherence to cdc’s infection, prevention and control guidelines when handling blood and body fluids as well as opim (other potentially infectious materials). Is responsible for delegated patient care duties by assisting the physician and staff nurse during procedures as well as other duties/assignments expected within this role. Must maintain current bls certification. Is responsible for daily preventative maintenance, monitoring and record keeping for equipment that has been sterilized and/or high-level disinfected. Is responsible for contributing to this facility’s core values.

hourly range: $19.00-$31.89 per hour (posted hourly range excludes overtime and bonuses which are not guaranteed)
responsibilities
* follows manufacturer instructions and center policy & procedures for manual cleaning, decontamination, sterilizing and/or high-level disinfection of all gi equipment and accessories as needed for facility approved procedures.
* demonstrates proper manual cleaning, decontamination, high level disinfection and storage of all gi scopes and accessories in accordance with nationally selected guidelines of the facility.
* selects appropriate cycle and sterilizes instruments in autoclave per sterilizer, instrument, and container instructions.
* ensures proper packaging and storage of sterilized instruments/equipment during terminal processing.
* operates the ultrasonic unit in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines.
* sets up gi suite and ensures that all equipment is functional prior to procedure.
* assists the physician in simple non-sedated procedures such as sigmoidoscopy.
* assists the physician with assigned gi procedures (e.g., egd, colonoscopy), performed under the direct supervision of the attending gi endoscopist.
* applies abdominal pressure (splinting) to facilitate advancement of the video endoscope through the intestine.
* ensures proper grounding and that all electro-cautery equipment is functional prior to use.
* uses biopsy forceps for the removal of specimens and ensures proper labeling of the same.
* checks that all irrigation fluid is properly labeled.
* maintains basic knowledge of troubleshooting endoscopic equipment during a procedure.
* entering patient-related data into endoscopic databases and the center’s electronic health record (as applicable).
* maintains involvement with medical supply inventory, monitors par levels, restocks items, and checks expiration dates.
* adheres to all approved facility policies/procedures.
* assists in rescues and/or resuscitative efforts as deemed necessary by the attending physician, anesthesia provider, and/or director.
* ensures that all equipment and supplies are available as needed for procedures.
* properly disposes of wastes following procedures.
* works well within a team environment and recognizes and utilizes safety precautions.
* performs other duties as requested or assigned and supports administrative decisions while reporting any concerns or violations of policies, regulations.

minimum requirements
education: high school education or equivalent.
certification, licensure: current certification in bls.
experience, training, knowledge: demonstrates strong comprehension of asepsis and sterile technique. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with physicians and all medical professionals.
