*about the role*:
the controller owns a portfolio of client accounts and steps into most of the client-facing controller work currently handled by the owner.
this role is responsible for accurate, timely accounting; clear financial reporting; and proactive communication with small
- and mid-sized business clients.
the controller must be comfortable working remotely, coordinating with a distributed team, and leading conversations with u.s.based business owners.
*what you'll do*:
- *primary accounting contact* for assigned clients, providing ongoing *client management and advisory*.
- lead *recurring client calls* (monthly / bi-weekly) to *review financials* and explain results in *clear, non-technical language*.
- *identify key issues* (cash flow, margins, variances, compliance) and *recommend actionable next steps*.
- *own full-cycle accounting and month-end close*, including *reconciliations, revenue recognition, ap/ar review, payroll entries, accruals, and prepaids*.
- prepare *accurate monthly financial statements* (*p&l, balance sheet, cash flow*) and *management reports*.
- maintain *strong workpapers and documentation* supporting all balances and adjustments.
- work primarily in *quickbooks online*, adhering to *firm sops* for bookkeeping and close.
- *identify and resolve errors* in client books; lead *cleanup and correction projects*.
- recommend *process improvements and automations* to increase efficiency and consistency.
- *collaborate with bookkeeping teams* (onshore and nearshore) to ensure *timely, high-quality delivery*.
- *review delegated work* and provide *constructive feedback*.
- consistently use and contribute to *firm templates, checklists, and sops*.
*qualifications*:
- *bachelor's degree* in *accounting* or *finance*, or *equivalent practical experience*.
- *minimum 5 years of hands-on accounting experience*, with *progressive growth* up to *senior accountant role*, including *month-end close ownership*.
- *direct experience preparing monthly financial statements* for *small to mid-sized businesses*.
*skills*:
- strong proficiency with *quickbooks online* (multi-entity, classes, projects or similar).
- solid excel/google sheets skills (vlookup/index-match, pivot tables, basic modeling).
- solid understanding of *u.s. Gaap* for small businesses.
- demonstrated ability to clean up messy books (unreconciled accounts, misclassifications, prior-period issues).
