as a border patrol agent, you will be responsible for:
* inspecting documents and questioning individuals to prevent illegal activity
* apprehending undocumented individuals or smugglers using surveillance and detection technology
* tracking and interpreting signs of illegal entry
* performing farm, traffic, building, city, and transport checks
key qualifications:
* gl-9: one year of specialized experience in searching detained persons, vehicles, and surroundings; apprehending or restraining suspects; and using firearms, writing reports, and serving warrants
* gs-11: one year of specialized experience in using intelligence to monitor criminal threats and operations; leading fraud or contraband investigations; and apprehending violators using surveillance and detection technology
benefits:
* competitive salary: gl-9/gs-11: $63,148 – $120,145 per year
* locality pay: varies by duty location

additional requirements:
* u.s. Citizenship
* residency: must have lived primarily in the u.s. for 3 of the last 5 years
* age: must be referred before turning 40 (exceptions for federal or veteran law enforcement)
* veterans: may qualify under veterans' recruitment appointment (vra)
formal training: after hiring, agents attend the u.s. Border patrol academy in artesia, nm for 6 months of instruction in immigration law, firearms, defensive tactics, spanish, and more.
