role description:
as a senior consultant, it will be actively engaged with senior business stakeholders, architects, product owners, operations teams, and third-party vendors, leading projects and ensuring alignment across multiple workstreams, providing expert-level services supporting to payment's initiatives and operational activities within the bsny for it gtb us area. The consultant will be the it payments represent in governance forums, contributing to project and operational governance as required.
in addition to delivery responsibilities, the consultant is expected to participate/contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, aiming to enhance system stability, operational efficiency, and service quality to meet all quality, robustness, compliance, and sustainability standards consistent within santander's internal methodologies, controls, and regulatory obligations.
main responsibilities:
1. Project management & delivery
* provide end-to-end project delivery services for payments related initiatives within the bsny 2026 bow.
* define, refine, and manage project scope and delivery approach, proactively identifying gaps, risks, dependencies, and mitigation actions.
* lead requirements elicitation and validation activities, engaging directly with business and operations stakeholders.
* perform as-is analysis and design to-be processes, ensuring alignment with business/operations objectives, architectural standards, regulatory requirements, etc.
* identify all applications, systems, interfaces, and integrations required to support/enhance new or existent products and/or processes.
* produce and maintain functional and technical documentation
* ensure environments, connectivity, access, tooling, etc., are in place across all project phases
* coordinate and oversee development activities across multiple internal teams and external vendors, ensuring alignment and timely execution.
* plan, coordinate, and support sit/uat, including defect management and resolution tracking.
* execute formal handovers for operations and production support, ensuring a controlled transition to bau.
2. Bau & payments operations support
* provide ongoing bau support services for payments applications, ensuring operational stability and continuity.
* perform analysis, design, development, troubleshooting, and maintenance of payment-related software solutions.
* act as a sme (subject matter expert) providing advanced troubleshooting for complex applications, systems, integrations, and performance issues.
* lead root cause analysis for production incidents and recurring issues, defining and implementing sustainable remediation actions in collaboration with support teams (if possible).
* design, implement, and support system enhancements, refactoring initiatives, and modernization efforts across the payments technology stack.
* work closely with payments operations teams to support day-to-day processing, resolve functional and technical issues, as well as address user queries.
* participate in incidents, problems, and change management processes, ensuring appropriate documentation and sla adherence.
* proactively identify applications improvements, automation opportunities, and operational efficiency initiatives.
* support regulatory, audit, and compliance activities, including preparation of evidence and remediation proposal of findings (vulnerabilities) when required.
* contribute to technical/architectural design proposal for complex initiatives, partnering closely with architects, product owners, and business stakeholders.
* ensure appropriate knowledge transfer and documentation to support teams, reducing operational risk and dependency on individual resources.
* experience working within controlled production environments with strong governance.
skills & expertise:
1. Payments standards & messaging
* knowledge of international payments standards (iso 20022, swift standards) and experience working with most payment messaging formats (mt formats and xml-based payment formats and related schemas) as well as service messages associated with payment processing (acknowledgements, notifications, investigations, etc.).
nice to have:
knowledge of us domestic payment schemes (e.g. Ach, fedwire, real-time payments (rtp), check processing and check-related payment operations and awareness of scheme rules, cut-off times, and operational considerations).
knowledge in us-regulated banking environments, with exposure to regulatory expectations impacting payments and transaction processing.
awareness of us regulatory and compliance domains relevant to payments:
* aml / sanctions screening considerations
* ofac-related payment controls
2. Payments platforms & applications
* hands-on experience with payments application platforms and integration, and file transfer solutions (e.g.: egifts and related suite products: icsweb (investigations), reports, edd, and/or sterling b2b integrator and related suite products such as itx, connect:direct, and/or mft).
* familiarity with end-to-end payment application ecosystems (channels, clients, origination) and downstream (clearing, settlement, accounting, reporting) integrations.
* ability to quickly understand/learn and operate within complex legacy and modern payment architectures, often combining batch and near-real-time processing models.
* strong analytical skills to bridge business requirements and technical solutions.
* experience working in regulated financial environments, with awareness of controls, audit requirements, and operational risk.
* ability to support regulatory reviews and audits (internal and external) including preparation of evidence, walkthroughs, and remediation proposals.
* understanding of the interaction between payments technology, compliance controls, and regulatory obligations.
* capability to interact effectively with architects, developers, support teams, and external vendors.
3. End-to-end payments processing & flows
understanding of end-to-end payment flows:
* payment initiation and ingestion
* validation, enrichment, and routing
* clearing and settlement processes
* generation of intraday and end-of-day accounting entries, accounting statements, reports, and reconciliation outputs
knowledge of operational payment lifecycles (exceptions handling, investigations, and repair processes).
understanding of dependencies between payments processing, accounting, liquidity, and reconciliation functions.
4. Technical foundation & engineering skills
programming languages (object-oriented like java / .net (c#)) understanding:
