Overview
Surveillance roles are responsible for the identification and management of undesired risk activities including conduct risk and financial crime risk. They integrate prescribed surveillance forms within the business, complementing existing processes and systems. The key focus is to implement the conduct surveillance and analytics strategy across business lines to identify market abuse and misconduct by staff and counterparties. The analyst reviews alerts and trading activity across trade surveillance, e-communication surveillance, and audio surveillance, and develops and analyzes new surveillance processes.
Responsibilities
- Identify potential new forms of staff or counterparty misconduct or market abuse.
- Assess whether these forms can be identified through the surveillance team’s current systems, processes, people, and data sets.
- In liaison with Product Management and Transformation Team, prioritise the development of systems, processes, people, and data needed to better identify these forms of misconduct for the business/asset class.
- Contribute to and track the development of new surveillance capabilities.
- Handle alerts after they pass the initial filter by the offshore team; ensure alerts are escalated and resolved satisfactorily.
- Provide support and guidance for the expanding offshoring function.
- Review alerts holistically to identify improvements in how alerts are generated to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
- Assist investigations requested by Regulators, senior management, and the businesses/asset classes; escalate material findings or incidents of misconduct as appropriate.
- Coordinate or produce regular Management Information reports for internal stakeholders, including analysis of the reports.
- Foster relationships with key front office and support function stakeholders.
- Assist team members with implementation and rollout of new surveillance tools and models.
- Present surveillance output at internal control and governance forums.
- Support the Surveillance team in addressing audit and control findings; liaise with Transformation and Technology to aid Surveillance delivery.
- Analyze and explore multiple data types to identify anomalies and risk patterns; understand financial products and HSBC’s processes around these products.
- Work across technology platforms (surveillance, analytics, trading platforms, etc.).
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of financial markets and traded products.
- Strong understanding of the rules relevant to trading and sales activities for Equities, Options, Money Market Foreign Exchange, and Fixed Income.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Well-developed communications, organizational, and project management skills.
- Ability to support decisions with sound reasoning and clearly articulate business and regulatory implications of analysis and findings.
- Evidence of collaboration with key stakeholder functions and ability to provide credible challenge to business/desk supervisors in risk management.
- Experience in a Surveillance role is a plus; consideration may be given to those with Compliance Advisory, Unauthorized Trading, Front-Office, or related alignment of requirements even if not direct Surveillance experience.
