Position: vice president - legal, autozone mexico
reports to: vice president, assistant general counsel and assistant secretary based in memphis, tennessee and dotted line to autozone mexico president based in monterrey, mexico.
main responsibilities:
- supports, drives and champions strategic priorities, plans and initiatives across all functional areas of autozone mexico as well as distribution centers and call center
- leads and manages legal department employees and functions, such as, for example, corporate, contracts and policies; litigation; store development, real estate and property management; permits (new and existing stores); government relations
- develops and advances legal department’s objectives, proactively identifies and mitigates risks plus ensures compliance with laws
- manages relationships with outside counsel, negotiates and tracks fees and budgets, sets and manages expectations, and develops case and matter strategies
- develops, encourages, coaches and supports legal team
- identifies and assesses legal risks, trends and opportunities, and works cross functionally with mexico and us teams to develop and implement strategies, mitigate exposure, drive objectives and capitalize opportunities
- active and trusted member of the mexico leadership team
- accountable for managing budget and other autozone fiduciary duties
- manages training for employees and third parties (product and service vendors) about applicable mexico and us regulations, autozone policies and expectations
- creates government relations action plans and leads strategies and tactics with internal and external stakeholders
- leads and develops enterprise-wide strategies for litigation defense, compliance, statutory filings, contracts, policies, etc.
education or specialization:
- law degree from an accredited law school in mexico required, results in upper third range preferred
- llm from an accredited u.s. law school preferred but not required
- real estate and/or labor and employment experience highly preferred but not required
- retail experience preferred but not required
experience and knowledge required:
- 7-10 years of experience in litigation in private practice and / or in-house
- experienced in managing attorneys

- experience or ability in corporate governance and compliance

- strong and confident written and verbal communication skills in spanish and english
- ability to objectively make decisions, lead and act independently using sound judgment and consistent with business strategies, values and senior executive alignment
- discreet and experienced in managing highly confidential and sensitive information
- fluent in spoken and written spanish and english
