Position purpose/summary
responsible for providing clear communication and guidance between the field operations and management. This position will provide a dedicated lead to the team, overseeing fleet readiness, specialized emergency preparedness, and positive community relations. Work includes enforcing all state laws and city ordinances regarding domestic animals. Work is performed under the supervision of the animal control supervisor. Technical supervision is exercised over the animal control officers as designated by the animal control supervisor.
essential functions
* provides guidance for high-risk calls, particularly those involving aggressive or fractious animals that need expert-level restraint.
* ensure all department standards are upheld, from complex field maneuvers to supporting medical and shelter staff during high-volume periods.
* assists with onboarding and training of all new hires.
* represents the departments at community events.
* manages the operational readiness of the department's vehicle fleet and equipment by coordinating routine maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime, and ensuring all vehicles are equipped with necessary tools for safe field operations.
* attends and provides testimony at dangerous dog hearings and court appeals, ensuring cases are well presented.
* responsible for the operational readiness of the department's disaster relief trailer, ensuring it is fully stocked, maintained, and ready for immediate deployment.
* responds to animal complaints, including animals at large, stray, ill, injured, vicious, abandoned, nuisance or abuse situations.
* assist the aco's with their response to animal complaints.
* works cooperatively with staff in all tjo program areas.
* ensures that proper care and attention is provided to all animals in the facility's custody in accordance with the facility's policies, procedures and any applicable laws.
* assists with selection of animals to be euthanized as knowledge of animal allows. Shares any credible knowledge of animal's health or behavior to ensure responsible disposition of animals according to the procedure established by the facility.
* investigates animal bite reports, advising both owner and victim of procedures and options.
* adheres to systems, methods, and procedures in accordance with modern humane and business practices and those practices employed by comparable humane societies and animal control facilities.
* handles problem situations, as assigned, internally (the facility) and externally (general public), relating to tjo's policies and procedures.
* prepares required reports.
* actively canvases community for unlicensed pets. Monitors subsequent compliance.
* assists other law enforcement and humane law enforcement officers as requested and/or necessary.
* performs other related duties as required.
knowledge, skills, and abilities
* ability and skill to deal with unruly, vicious, and dangerous animals in a humane manner.
* good oral and written communication skills.
* ability to deal diplomatically with peers and the public.
* ability to handle a stressful work load.
* ability to communicate in the english language. Bilingual (spanish) preferred.
* possesses strong understanding of shelter animal population, health and disease control.
* possesses ability to vaccinate, medicate, draw blood and perform humane euthanasia of shelter animals.
education and experience
* high school diploma or equivalent.
* minimum of three (3) years in animal welfare/control.
* acoam/naca animal control certification required.
