Key responsibilities:
- cost analysis: analyze production costs, including raw materials, labor, and overhead, to determine accurate cost structures for products and services.
- cost tracking: maintain and track cost-related data, including costs of goods sold (cogs), inventory valuation, and variances.
provide regular reports on cost performance.
- budgeting & forecasting: assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
work with other departments to estimate and monitor expected costs and track deviations from the budget.
- inventory management: monitor inventory levels and perform cost-effective inventory valuation.
conduct periodic inventory audits and resolve discrepancies between physical and recorded inventory.
- cost allocation: ensure accurate allocation of production costs to individual products, ensuring adherence to cost accounting standards and company policies.
- variance analysis: conduct detailed variance analysis to identify differences between budgeted, standard, and actual costs.
provide recommendations to management on improving cost control and efficiency.
- reporting: prepare regular cost reports for management, including detailed analysis of cost performance and suggestions for improving cost efficiency and profitability.
- internal controls: ensure compliance with accounting principles and company policies by maintaining strong internal controls over cost-related processes.
work to improve these controls where necessary.
- process improvement: collaborate with operations, finance, and other departments to identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, and better cost management practices.
- support audits: assist internal and external auditors with cost-related information during audits, ensuring accuracy and transparency of financial data.
qualifications:
- education: bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- experience: 3+ years of experience in cost accounting in a manufacturing or production environment.
- technical skills: strong understanding of cost accounting principles and practices.
proficiency in accounting software syspro preferred (e.g., netsuite, sap, quickbooks, or similar) and microsoft excel.
- analytical skills: ability to analyze large amounts of data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to management.
- detail-oriented: high attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality of financial reporting.
- communication: strong verbal and written communication skills.
ability to explain complex cost data to non-financial staff in a clear and concise manner.
- time management: ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
preferred qualifications:
- certifications: cpa (certified public accountant), cma (certified management accountant), or similar certification is a plus.
- erp systems: experience with erp systems for manufacturing cost tracking and reporting.
- industry knowledge: familiarity with cost accounting in a manufacturing or production environment is highly desirable.
