position summary:
we are seeking a principal database administrator (dba) with deep expertise in sql server, and a strong emphasis on proactive monitoring, performance optimization, and tuning. This role will lead database operations, set standards, and drive continuous improvements to ensure reliability, scalability, and high performance of our data systems. Experience with sybase ase and oracle is a plus.
as a technical leader, you will not only own the health and efficiency of our database platforms but also mentor junior team members and contractors, helping to raise the bar for database excellence across the organization.

job functions, essential duties and key responsibilities
* lead the design, implementation, and ongoing optimization of complex sql server database environments.
* provide expert-level support for database performance tuning, query optimization, and resource management.
* proactively monitor systems to ensure high availability, reliability, and scalability of sql server platforms
* implement backup/recovery strategies, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions.
* collaborate with development and devops teams to support application performance and data integrity.
* manage database access, roles, and security in compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
* automate routine database tasks using scripts and job schedulers (e.g., jams, powershell).
* maintain database documentation, including architecture diagrams, configuration, and sops.
* lead database upgrades, patching, and migrations with minimal downtime.
* provide on-call support for critical issues and participate in root cause analysis.
* evaluate new database technologies and recommend improvements to the existing environment.
* mentor and guide junior dbas and database engineers in best practices, troubleshooting, and scripting techniques.
experience, skills, knowledge requirements:
* 7+ years of experience with sql server (2016 or newer) database administration and engineering in a production environment.
* deep understanding of t-sql, performance tuning (execution plans, indexing), and query optimization techniques.
* experience supporting mission-critical, high-volume sql server instances (including alwayson, clustering, and replication).
* solid understanding of relational database concepts, normalization, and data modeling techniques.
* experience with automation tools (e.g., powershell, sql agent, or scripting in ci/cd pipelines).
* proven ability to troubleshoot complex database issues under pressure.
* experience working in a windows server environment with knowledge of active directory integration.
* familiarity with agile, devops, and sdlc processes.
* excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

* experience in business intelligence role, including data warehousing and business intelligence tools, techniques and technology
* microsoft certified business intelligence in the above required skills
* experience with microsoft ssis
* experience with relational databases: sybase ase, oracle, mysql and others a plus
* experience with analytic platforms (data mining, predictive modeling) a plus
