skills needed for the role role summary
the application monitoring operations manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations, strategy, and continuous improvement of application and platform monitoring across azure-hosted services. This role ensures high availability, performance, and reliability through proactive monitoring, incident management, alert optimization, observability standards, and operational governance. You will lead a team (and/or managed service partners) to deliver measurable outcomes against slas/slos, reduce noise, and improve meantime to detect/resolve (mttd/mttr).
key responsibilities monitoring & observability leadership
* own the monitoring operations function for azure-hosted applications and related services.
* define and enforce observability standards (metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, alerting) across engineering and operations teams.
* drive adoption and best practices for azure monitor, application insights, log analytics, and diagnostic settings.
* establish and maintain monitoring coverage for business-critical applications, apis, background services, and integrations.
* ensure end-to-end monitoring including dependencies (databases, messaging, networking, identity, storage, third-party services).
incident & problem management
* lead the incident management lifecycle (triage, escalation, communications, coordination, resolution).
* manage on-call processes and escalation paths; ensure timely incident response and stakeholder updates.
* conduct post-incident reviews (pirs/rca), identify root causes, and track corrective/preventive actions to closure.
* partner with application owners, sre/devops, and infrastructure teams to reduce repeat incidents.
alerting strategy & noise reduction
* own alert configuration standards (severity, thresholds, suppression, correlation, routing, runbooks).
* reduce alert fatigue through tuning, deduplication, dynamic thresholds, and actionable alert design.
* establish event correlation and "golden signals" monitoring (latency, traffic, errors, saturation).
dashboards, reporting & service health
* build and maintain operational dashboards for real-time service health and executive visibility.
* provide reporting on availability, performance, capacity, mttd/mttr, incident trends, and sla/slo compliance.
* define and track slos/slis in partnership with product and engineering teams.
automation & continuous improvement
* drive automation for monitoring deployment, alert creation, and runbook remediation (powershell, azure automation, logic apps, functions).
* implement monitoring-as-code practices using iac (arm/bicep/terraform) and ci/cd integration (azure devops/github).
* maintain and improve operational runbooks/kbs and support documentation.
stakeholder & vendor management
* coordinate with engineering, architecture, security, and service owners to align monitoring with business priorities.
* manage third-party tools and/or msp relationships (service reviews, kpis, quality improvements).
* collaborate with security operations where logs/alerts overlap (e.g., microsoft sentinel integration).
