Job Description
The role encompasses two key areas: (i) the day‐to‐day proactive management of legal and quasi‐legal matters (with a priority on customer contracts) across the risk spectrum in the region and (ii) delivering advice and support for the Legal Team's strategic initiatives. Key to the role is understanding the John‐Crane business and developing close relationships with employees across all levels to shape strategy and improve legal risk management.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Act as the day‐to‐day contact for all regional legal matters within LATAM, focusing on commercial contracting and HR matters.
- Analyze and negotiate large customer contracts, ensuring compliance with the company's preferred terms and coordinating with sales, engineering, compliance, and health & safety teams.
- Provide routine legal reporting to senior management, including the Senior Director, Sales (LATAM) and General Counsel.
- Support LATAM real estate work, including lease renewal and new‐lease negotiations.
- Assist the local HSE team with responses to government agencies regarding HSE compliance.
- Manage the Latin America legal budget within the overall John‐Crane Legal budget.
- Deliver training for John‐Crane colleagues across Latin American businesses.
- Represent the John‐Crane Legal function at regional management and strategic meetings.
- Support the company in delivering strategic initiatives and shaping future direction.
- Work closely with business units to support day‐to‐day needs across the risk spectrum (e.g., business development, commercial, corporate, contract, IP, dispute resolution, compliance, international trade).
- Deliver high‐standard advice within required timeframes that meet commercial needs.
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with senior management and stakeholders.
- Travel to John‐Crane sites as appropriate.
- Identify and anticipate risks and opportunities to foster proactive behaviours and practices.
- Coordinate and support other members of the John‐Crane (and Smiths Group Legal) function as needed.
- Support ethics, compliance, and governance processes, exemplifying a culture of integrity and best business practices.
Qualifications
- Education: Law degree from an accredited university or equivalent.
- License: Qualified to practice law in Mexico, Brazil, or another Latin American country.
- Experience: Tier 1 law firm and/or in‐house experience with 8+ years post‐qualification.
- Contract drafting and negotiation experience, especially complex commercial contracts.
- Fluency in English; strong Portuguese language skills desired.
- Advisory and commercial experience.
- Exposure to high‐tech industrial or manufacturing operations.
- Experience managing risk across the spectrum.
- Experience working for an international business and interpreting local law advice in jurisdictions outside one's home country.
