about the role
working within the publishing content development team, the development editor has day-to-day responsibility for content development from initial writing brief to publication, ensuring material is of high quality and aligned to the publishing vision of the commissioning editor and publisher. The development editor may also commission ancillary items under the guidance of the commissioning or senior development editor. The role involves cross-functional liaison with concept development and content delivery teams to create material that meets the needs of the key audience and is published on schedule and within budget.
role responsibilities
* market awareness and research: understand/establish market needs, conduct desk and market research, assess competition and segments; attend classroom observations where possible; align with the publishing vision and macmillan education’s business needs.
* content/manuscript development: support investment approval (ia) process, assist in concept development, sample materials, and market research/feedback; prepare author briefs; identify potential authors and external content creators; manage contracts and budgets for external contributors; oversee external content to meet standards; provide feedback to authors; flag content development issues to keep delivery on time and within budget; understand budgeting processes and financial implications; participate in audits like audio/video shoots and asset briefs; manage rights clearance processes.
* art and production briefs: create artwork, design and digital specification briefs, style sheets, page plans and asset briefs; review overmatter for print and digital outputs.
* rights and approvals: ensure correct procedures for external contributors and rights clearance.

* stay up to date on elt/efl issues, undertake reading and attend relevant conferences; participate in training sessions to develop skills.

experience, skills & qualifications
essential
* educated to degree level or equivalent
* formal elt/tefl qualification
* demonstrable elt/efl teaching experience in primary and/or secondary settings
* excellent written english
* ability to work to tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks
* excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* positive attitude and commitment to company aims
* strong teamwork and organisational skills
desirable
* knowledge of elt markets and segments
* appreciation for a wide international range of teaching and learning situations
