our optical communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.this segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network.
the carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications.
the enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
*role purpose*:
maintain and advance the fundamental understanding and direction of assigned core capabilities at world class levels.
creates core capability strategy.
direct the organization to deliver robust, cost effective technical solutions in support of achieving lowest possible competitive costs, advantaged products, and superior quality and service.
ensure critical mass of capable practitioners in the core technology area(s).
provide community of practice leadership to further technical development and depth
*key responsibilities*:
- define and implement engineering capability ownership plans and strategies that support the corporate business and engineering objectives
- understand and quantify the capabilities state of the art and world class performance.
compare organization capabilities relative to world class, remain abreast of state of the art, articulate plan to upgrade where required, and instill processes required to upgrade appropriate areas
- establish a culture that values engineering capability, technical depth, and deployment of scientific method
- define and successfully manage organization resources and project portfolio in support of strategic business objectives and line business critical projects
- coaches broadly, developing and encouraging the next leaders within the technology area across the company
- build an effective technical network of internal relationships within the technology community, division engineering, and plant levels and external relationships with critical technology suppliers, peers, academia, and research labs
- champion core capability enhancement and other engineering processes and initiatives (performance excellence, lean, project management, process excellence, safety/environmental, etc)
- through direct reports, manage organization resources (people, budgets, labs, etc) as necessary to support overall business objectives)
- leads for company or division a community of practice for core capability area(s).
ensure division or companywide appropriate critical mass of practitioners and advancement of practitioners' abilities
- drives step change high impact changes in key technology area(s)
*experiences/education - required*:
- bachelor of science in engineering or equivalent technical degree
- progressive responsibilities in engineering and engineering leadership including multiple engineering departments, second level supervision experience and collaborating with other groups to achieve results
- track record of engineering accomplishment (e.g.
experience leading teams and departments in delivering significant capital projects to manufacturing, meeting continuous improvement goals, making step change process improvements, managing innovation, and expanding technical capability with a focus on key project management skills)
- demonstrated track record of growing talent
*experiences/education - desired*:
- masters of science (engineering or equivalent)
- experience in both early-stage innovation projects (stage 2-3) and mature businesses (stage 4-5)
- external recognition such as green/yellow/ black belt, lean, pmi, professional engineering or committee member of a technical society
- experience in technical collaboration with internal engineering groups (mte, development, division engineering) and manufacturing as well as external technology organizations
- experience in managing strategy, projects, capital, and the innovation process
