*summary*
the engineer and technical design manager leads a collaborative multi-talented group within and across multiple business units.
They play a critical role by bringing engineering discipline and design-for-manufacturing expertise to support business unit project objectives, mentoring staff, and advancing the goals of the chapter.
They keep team members focused on adding value and delivering best-in-class execution of all engineering and technical design tasks.
They encourage their team to think innovatively, develop strategic solutions that will allow the company to meet the continuing demands of design-for-cost / manufacturing and to collaborate with their in-house and offshore manufacturing teams.
Engineering & technical design managers work directly with account managers, project managers, clients, and manufacturing partners to ensure all project needs are met.
Responsible and accountable for the execution of the following duties
lead and direct a cross function team that includes engineer technologists, technical illustrators and desk top publishing designers
facilitate resource sharing and workload level loading between bu’s within the market segment
identity & manage seasonal spikes within the bu’s
work directly with account managers, project managers, clients, and manufacturing partners to ensure all project needs are met.
Direct and oversee all phases of engineering.
Provide team members with feedback, guidance, and approval on project assignments
ensure format of deliverables and quality of presentations are in line with standards.
Keep team member focused on adding value, lead brainstorming sessions, develop ideas and collaborate with all project stakeholders.
Motivate and influence the team to always attain excellence in performance and being an advocate of the array way” across all bu’s and geographical locations
make va/ve in the engineering phase a cornerstone of all engineer concepts
encourage innovative solutions and creative exploration to address design for manufacturability
perform failure analysis and problem solving (8d process) to improve product design and to prevent recurrence of product design related problems
recommend measures to improve process methods, team performance and quality of work
work with the peers to define strategic development plans for the team including both technical and non-technical improvements in the operations
develop the team’s collective capabilities and expertise within the market segment, while capturing and socializing best practices across the chapter
help to develop tools & processes to monitor companywide workload with assistance of resource analyst
collaborate with the bu leaders and the chapter coe to develop strategic solutions that will allow the company to meet the continuing demands of design for cost and manufacturing (dfm/ dfc)
audit sop / “standards” compliance & identify needs for training
pdm (file saving)
datacard (or sw custom properties)
bill of material accuracy and completeness
engineering package accuracy at prototype development and production phases.
On-time execution to milestone dates
dataweb (task status, hour entry, file upload) maintenance
lead, develop and mentor all direct reports; conduct performance management reviews and implement development plans; establish goals and objectives for each team member
manage expectations and standards; support a fair and positive culture and professional development
uphold company policies and enforce safety regulations.
Track and approve all vacation & personal days for direct reports.
Ensure performance reviews are completed on time and provide meaningful feedback.
Follow all policies and procedures and ensure accountability with the assigned team members
support continuous improvement and health and safety initiatives
conduct all work duties as per the occupational health & safety act & regulations, the health, safety & environmental policies, procedures, and policies of array canada
perform any other reasonable assignments given by your manager or his/her designates
adhere to the agile sprint framework and facilitates all required meetings
*qualifications*:
holds a college or university degree/diploma in mechanical or industrial design (or similar field), 3+ years in pop/retail design experience, with a minimum of 3 years as senior designer or manager; or a combination of education and experience
client relations - strong understanding of client business objectives and strategies
excellent understanding of materials and processes commonly used within the industry
working knowledge of design development software
experienced in leading others
experienced with meeting facilitation
able to read and interpret documents such as design briefs, safety rules, and procedure manuals
have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence as well as speak effectively before gr
