performs legal assistant work in support of paralegal and attorneys in immigration law matters; establishes evidence and develops cases; prepares drafts, outlines or summaries of legal subjects, laws, statutes, briefs and other legal documents. Works under attorney supervision while independently managing assigned tasks with minimal oversight.
case management & documentation
- maintain records/filing systems and process mail from clients, uscis, court, fbi, ice, etc.
- perform case assembly: prepare and organize complete case packets for attorney review and submission to uscis or other relevant agencies.
- collect, review, and organize client documents, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- draft and prepare immigration forms, affidavits, and supporting documents.
- maintain case files and update the internal case management system.
- track deadlines and ensure timely submission of client cases.
legal support by practice area
- general immigration: handle foias, case searches, and related administrative matters.
- family-based immigration: support one-step family-based petitions and adjustment of status for clients with complications (criminal history, complex family structure, etc.); assist with consular processing; draft and respond to moderately complex rfes and noids; prepare initial appeals to aao or bia for less complex issues.
- humanitarian relief: assist in preparing vawa petitions, i-751 waivers, u visas, and asylum applications.
- removal defense: assist in preparing documents for deportation defense cases, pd requests, and basic motions.
client & team coordination
- manage client communications with empathy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity from intake to resolution.
- assist attorneys with tasks needed in a client's immigration case through a workshare task model (e.g., making inquiries to uscis, copying/organizing client documents, facilitating approval workshops for clients).
- collaborate with attorneys, case coordinators, and client care specialists to move cases forward efficiently.
- assist in training and mentoring new case coordinators, interns, or entry-level legal assistants.
- conduct legal research and draft memoranda under attorney supervision.
administrative & operational support
- manage and monitor client data collection, client database, office phone, and calendaring systems.
- assist with coverage for telephone and walk-in reception duties and other administrative tasks as needed.
- uphold confidentiality and compliance with firm policies and immigration regulations.
- fluent in spanish and english (written and verbal).
- 2 to 4 years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or similar legal support role, preferably in immigration law.
- strong writing skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- proficiency in immigration law procedures and forms.
- ability to organize, multi-task, work independently, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- ability to work independently on moderately complex matters with minimal supervision.
preferred
- background in legal services or demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and immigrants' rights.
- experience with case management systems and immigration databases.
- familiarity with uscis, eoir, and federal court procedures.
