kubernetes engineer job summary

at cummins, we are powering a world that's always on. As a kubernetes engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of container orchestration solutions that support our global development teams. You'll work with cross-functional teams to develop scalable, secure, and cloud-native systems that accelerate innovation through devops, continuous delivery, and automation. This is a hands‐on engineering role with significant influence over system architecture, developer experience, and platform reliability.

key responsibilities
* design and implement high‐availability kubernetes infrastructure across cloud (eks, aks) and/or on‐premises platforms (e.g., openshift).
* drive continuous improvement in the continuous delivery pipeline using tools like github actions, argocd, helm, jfrog, and argo workflows.
* develop and maintain infrastructure as code (iac) using terraform, enabling automated, scalable deployments.
* administer and optimize kubernetes clusters, using tools such as karpenter (auto‐scaling), kyverno (policy enforcement), and service meshes like istio or linkerd.
* define and implement non‐functional requirements (security, performance, availability, etc.) for kubernetes workloads.
* collaborate with product teams and architects to align infrastructure with business needs, ensuring reusable, modular components.
* participate in agile ceremonies including pi planning, solution reviews, and inspect and adapt events.
* guide the enablement of internal developer portals (e.g., backstage, spacelift, humanitec) to enhance developer productivity and devex.
* lead technical evaluations of commercial vs custom solutions, considering security, cost, and long‐term scalability.
* advocate for and apply lean‐agile and safe principles, supporting decentralized decision‐making and continuous delivery.
responsibilities core competencies
* agile systems thinking & architecture – design resilient, scalable architectures using modern devops principles.
* continuous delivery & automation – champion ci/cd pipelines and automation to enable rapid, safe deployments.
* communication & collaboration – work cross‐functionally with engineering, business, and security teams globally.
* cloud & devsecops expertise – deep understanding of cloud‐native tooling, infrastructure security, and compliance standards.
* innovation & problem solving – identify opportunities to enhance platform performance and developer efficiency.
* business & global insight – align technical strategies with business outcomes and global it frameworks.
* english proficiency sufficient for professional communication
education, licenses, certifications
* bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
* relevant cloud and devops certifications preferred:
* certified kubernetes administrator (cka)
* google cloud, aws, or azure certifications
* docker, puppet, terraform, or github certifications
* comptia or other infrastructure/security credentials (preferred)
experience required
* 5–8 years of experience in it, with at least 5 years working directly with kubernetes in an administrator or platform engineer role.
* experience managing kubernetes clusters with tools such as eks, aks, or openshift.
* strong experience with github, including managing workflows and code pipelines.
* hands‐on experience with ci/cd tools (github actions, argocd, jfrog) and iac with terraform.
* familiarity with kubernetes ecosystem tools such as karpenter, kyverno, and service mesh technologies (istio/linkerd).
* experience developing or supporting an internal developer portal is a plus.
* prior experience as an it architect or working in an agile enterprise environment is preferred.
unique job requirements
* must be comfortable operating in a global, highly matrixed environment, aligning with both enterprise‐wide architecture and localized devops practices.
* expected to play a strategic and tactical role, balancing long‐term architecture goals with short‐term delivery needs.
* ability to coach teams on devops best practices, promote reusability, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
* may require travel or working across global time zones to collaborate with distributed teams.
* this position may require compliance with export control regulations —applicants must be eligible as per applicable laws.
