Job Purpose
A Product Development Engineer (PDE) is responsible for the design, development and release of components that are used in conjunction with each other within an assembly to meet the overall performance requirements of a product.
The PDE works within the eDrive Engineering organization in collaboration with the Product Engineers, CAD Designers and CAE (Component - Aided Engineering) Engineers.
The PDE must be capable of completing work requests from the Product Engineer to meet the defined program performance requirements and timing.
The PDE must also request design and analysis work from the CAD and/or CAE team members while working simultaneously with Manufacturing, Purchasing, and suppliers to achieve component release.
The PDE simultaneously works with manufacturing team and assembly disciplines, GSM (General Supplier Management), SDE (Supplier Development Engineer), and suppliers to receive input and to address technical issues in preparation of production launch, and during production to support cost reductions and robustness improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Have a good understanding of Automotive Driveline or Powertrain components
- Good analytical skills for designing and analyzing components and sub-systems
- Thorough knowledge of component drawing requirements, including tolerances, GD&T;, and their use in stack calculations
- Perform engineering analysis and calculations on components and sub-systems and present rationale to program team
- Issue CAE requests and provide direction as needed for analysis of systems and components.
- Create and maintain component and/or sub-system DFMEAs and use them to define Special Characteristics
- Create design work orders and provide direction to CAD as necessary to develop the product design. Approve and release engineering drawings.
- Create ADVP&R; to validate components and write lab work orders to direct technicians to conduct testing on components.
- Analyse components for wear and durability.
- Write test reports relating to the outcome of tests performed.
- Be the point of contact for technical discussions with Purchasing, suppliers, and Supplier Development Engineers.
- Create technical criteria for supplier selection and participate in the selection process.
- Support global engineering organization with knowledge and best practices.
- Promote component re-use through knowledge of the global component family.
- Review / Approve internal and external change requests.
- Provide technical support for component issues arising in validation or warranty concerns.
- Provide cost reduction ideas for their respective component families.
- Work in Siemens Teamcenter to manage drawings, BOM (Bill Of Materials) structure, and 3D models.
- Willingness and ability to travel locally to manufacturing sites, with a primary focus on gaining hands-on knowledge of the assembly line and providing support for component design and production-related concerns as needed.
- New Business Opportunity (NBO) pursuits by designing and developing complete mechanical systems, including integrated drive modules (iDMs) and fully assembled eMotors.
What we are looking for
REQUIRED
Education
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (minimum requirement)
Industry Experience:
- Over 5 years of engineering experience in the automotive sector or a or a global manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with EV and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) Powertrain systems, including powertrain, transmission, and electric drive module components is required.
- Background in powertrain systems, with demonstrated experience in development, or integration regarded as an asset.
- Demonstrated success in the design, development, and launch of advanced powertrain systems, with a strong track record of delivering high-performance solutions from concept to production
Technical Expertise:
- Experience and/or training in Root Cause Analysis is preferred
